Mark Harrison, Norfolk Coalition of Disabled People's Chief Executive, along with Neil Howard, Equality and Diversity Officer from Norfolk County Council, spent this morning discussing a wide range of topics around the lives of disabled people on BBC Radio Norfolk Breakfast show.
The show came after a week of features where disabled people around Norfolk discussed their experiences of living with an impairment, and societies attitudes to them, which concluded with the hour long show.
Stephen Bumfrey, the Breakfast show presenter, commented that the weeks segments had been eye opening, and at times, uncomfortable listening.
As the show demonstrated through its items each day, disabled people encounter a wide range of experiences throughout their daily lives. From those experiences common to everyone, to the more particle, such as people voicing unhappiness that a blind young person is out walking in the evening, the stigma still experienced by people with mental health difficulties or a blind shopper left standing, waiting, for over 10 minutes, because a shop assistant did not engage her
During the hour, Jonathan Shaw, the Minister for Disabled People, joined the discussion, were he along with Mark, Neil and Stephen discussed a number of issues, including the recent green paper "Shaping the Future of Care Together" which suggests ways to improve the care and support system in England.
Mark made the point that, many disabled people have said that they would prefer the same model the NHS has used for the last 60 years, that service is free at the point of delivery, to be used for social care as well.
