Youth Forum hit Westminster

After six months of learning the skills of film making and a lot of hard work, 18 members of the youth forum made their way down to Portcullis House to launch their film ‘Don’t Dis Me I’m Able’ to MPs, Peers, celebrities and disability campaigners.

The project came about as a result of the groups desire to ‘discard stereotypes in favour of equality and equal opportunity’. The film is an exploration of the lives and aspirations of their disabled heroes mixed with inspirational stories and insights into their own lives. With a desire to be seen simply as normal, the group contrast the lives of the famous with their own hopes and dreams. The film includes interviews with David Blunkett MP, paralymian Ade Adepitan, TV presenter Cerrie Burnell, Dame Tanni Grey Thompson, Radio 4’s Peter White and performer Mat Fraser and animation and soundtrack also created by the group.

They intend to use the film to share their perspective and opinions with those who have influence and make decisions over the running of services, which is so important at the moment when so many services are being cut. With the plan to get the film online and circulated to as wider audience as possible they hope the film will help to educate not just professionals, but the general public too.

“Using film to change attitudes about disability is a great way to get the message across. I'm sure this film will have a lasting impact on those who had the privilege to attend”. Maggie Atkinson, Children’s commissioner. http://www.childrenscommissioner.gov.uk/content/blog/content_367
